Discover Your Ideal Hat Style Based on Your Face Shape

By Diib9 Min Read

Hats for your face shape follow one rule: add what the face lacks, soften what it has too much of. A round face needs height and angles, a long face needs width and a low crown, a square face needs curves, a heart-shaped face needs a lower crown and a medium brim.

Oval faces can wear almost anything as long as the proportion holds.

The easiest way to control that proportion is the brim, which is why women's wide-brim hats in 4 to 6 inches cover four of the six shapes in this guide.

Measure your face first, then go to your shape below; each section gives the crown height, the brim width, the hat to avoid and one hat that fits.

There are six face shapes that matter for hats: round, oval, square, heart, diamond and oblong (long). Two methods work; the second is more reliable.

Mirror method: pull your hair back, stand close to a mirror, trace the outline of your face with a washable marker or lipstick, step back and compare the outline to the six shapes.

Measuring method: use a soft tape and take four measurements.

Measurement Where
Forehead Widest point, usually halfway between eyebrows and hairline
Cheekbones Across the most prominent point, just below the outer corner of each eye
Jaw From the tip of the chin to below the ear, then double it
Length Center of the hairline to the tip of the chin

Then read the result:

  • Length is clearly greater than width, forehead and jaw similar: oblong
  • Length is slightly greater than width, forehead a little wider than jaw: oval
  • Length and width about equal, soft jaw: round
  • Length and width about equal, angular jaw: square
  • Forehead wider than jaw, chin pointed: heart
  • Cheekbones widest, forehead and jaw narrow: diamond

Face shape sets the hat shape, not the hat size. Head circumference is a separate measurement; the hat sizing guide shows where to take it.

1. Heart Face

If you have any of the following characteristics, your face is heart-shaped:

  • Your forehead is wider than your jawline.
  • Your chin is pointed.

The forehead is already the widest part of a heart-shaped face, so the hat should not add width there. Hats for a heart-shaped face keep the crown low and the brim medium, 3 to 4 inches, with a soft or downturned edge that draws the eye toward the jaw.

A bucket hat, a soft-brim fedora or a cloche worn slightly lower on the forehead all narrow the top of the face visually.

Avoid tall crowns and very wide, flat brims: both widen the forehead line and sharpen the chin. The Shenia™ Bow Cloche, with a 3-inch brim and a low crown, is the reference shape; for a casual version, browse women's bucket hats.

2. Diamond Face

If you possess the following characteristics, your face is diamond-shaped:

  • The widest part of your face is where your cheekbones are located.
  • Your forehead and jawline are narrow.

A diamond face needs width at the forehead and softness at the cheekbones, which means a medium to wide brim, 3.5 to 5 inches, and a low to medium crown worn a little lower on the forehead than usual. A floppy hat, a wide-brim fedora with a soft crown or a boater with a medium brim all do this.

The brim should reach at least as far as the cheekbones so they stop being the widest line.

Avoid narrow brims and tall, pinched crowns: they leave the cheekbones as the widest point and make the forehead look narrower. The Bella Straw Packable Hat, a soft floppy brim in UPF 50+ Squishee®, suits this shape.

3. Oblong Face

You have an oblong face if you have the following features:

  • Your face is clearly longer than it is wide.
  • Your jawline, cheeks and forehead are all essentially the same width.

An oblong face needs width, not height.

The ideal sun hats for long faces have a low, flat or rounded crown of 3 to 3.5 inches and a brim of 4 to 6 inches: a boater, a floppy hat, a cloche or a wide-brim fedora worn straight, not tilted. Wearing the hat lower on the forehead shortens the visible face further.

Avoid anything that adds height: tall crowns, high-crowned fedoras, and beanies or caps that sit on top of the head and extend the line upward. A baseball cap with a low crown is the one exception for casual wear, but it adds no width.

The Artista Straw Packable Hat and the Gondolier Boater Hat, both with flat crowns and wide brims, are the two shapes that do the most for a long face.

Both are UPF 50+ Squishee®, so the wide brim also covers the neck and ears, the areas the Australian Government's minimum of 7.5 cm (3 inches) is designed to protect.

Because almost every shape works, choose by crown height instead: a low-profile crown keeps the proportion of an oval face intact, which is why the fedoras for an oval face edit is built around low and medium crowns.

Summary: The Right Hat for Your Face Shape

Four of the six face shapes are flattered by a wide brim and a low or medium crown; only round and oval faces benefit from height. If you are unsure of your shape, a medium brim of 3.5 to 4 inches with a medium crown is the safest choice, and a hat with a soft brim can be shaped up or down to fine-tune the proportion.

Face shape is the first proportion, not the only one. Your height and shoulder width set the maximum brim (never wider than the shoulders), and your hairstyle changes how much crown height shows; how to wear a hat for ladies covers both.

For a round face specifically, choosing hats for a round face goes deeper, and for the brand's product picks by shape, see the hat for every face shape.

Whatever your shape, start with the brim: the UPF 50+ women's hats collection sorts by brim width, so you can pick the proportion first and the style second.

FAQs: Hats for Your Face Shape

What hats suit a round face?

Hats with a tall, angular crown and a medium brim of 3 to 4 inches suit a round face, because they add length and straight lines. A fedora or a boater worn slightly tilted works; round crowns, bucket hats and very small brims make the face look wider.

What hats suit an oblong or long face?

A low crown and a wide brim of 4 to 6 inches suit a long face, because they add width and shorten the visible length. Boaters, floppy hats and cloches worn straight and a little lower on the forehead are the best shapes; tall crowns and beanies add height and should be avoided.

What hats suit a heart-shaped face?

A low crown with a medium, soft-edged brim of 3 to 4 inches suits a heart-shaped face, because it narrows the forehead line without adding width. Cloches, bucket hats and soft fedoras work; tall crowns and wide flat brims widen the forehead and sharpen the chin.

What hats suit a diamond face?

A medium to wide brim of 3.5 to 5 inches with a low to medium crown suits a diamond face, because the brim reaches past the cheekbones and the forehead reads wider. Floppy hats and soft wide-brim fedoras work; narrow brims and tall pinched crowns leave the cheekbones as the widest point.

How do I know my face shape for a hat?

Measure forehead, cheekbones, jaw and face length with a soft tape. Length clearly greater than width is oblong; equal with a soft jaw is round; equal with an angular jaw is square; forehead wider than jaw with a pointed chin is heart; cheekbones widest is diamond; everything else is oval.

Does brim width or crown height matter more?

Brim width matters more for long, heart, diamond and square faces; crown height matters more for round faces. Oval faces are balanced by either, so proportion to shoulder width is the deciding factor: the brim should never be wider than the shoulders.
